CATCH YOURSELF IN THE ACT.

I love this command…
when put forth with love.

More fun and irreverent than a call for more self-awareness and introspection.
But the same call.

It’s a favorite, gentle reminder to myself…
to my loved ones…
and to my clients, students, and mentees.

SEE *YOURSELF* IN ACTION!

Track where you’re lying to yourself…
unwilling to truly look…

Refusing to notice how YOU have contributed to the way things are, within an uncomfortable situation you find yourself in.

Maybe it’s a personal problem you have…
Or a professional problem…
Or a socio-political problem.

Notice where you are averting your eyes!
What input are you outright ignoring…
so that you don’t need to take certain data points into account? So that your left hand need not admit to what your right hand is doing?

Are you refusing to challenge your own thinking?
Or question your own rightness?
Even as it’s clearly being asked of you by life?

Do you ever wonder how YOU manifested whatever situation you’re in?

Do you inquire as to what made YOU a match for that experience?

Do you ever observe the parts of YOU that are exactly like that which you critique?

Do you ever bear witness to the hypocrite that lives within you?

Do you ever take stock of where you’re blaming and shaming others… for conditions YOU had a hand in creating?

Ever open your eyes to the ways YOU are reifying that which you problematize?

Ever wake up to YOU being the living emblem of the qualities of character you oppose?

Ever bring awareness to YOUR foibles and failings?

Ever attune to how YOUR heart is closed, bitter, and resentful?

Ever get deeply curious about…
how others are experiencing you?

We’re a culture of finger-pointing.
Of forever locating a problem outside of ourselves.

It’s time for self-reflection.

If we don’t examine ourselves…
If we don’t know who we are…
If we haven’t excavated the content of our own character…
If we haven’t explored our inner landscape…

How on earth can we accurately perceive the world around us?

It’s time we take this more seriously.
It’s time we put stock in this.
It’s time we see ourselves in action.

Time to catch ourselves in the act.
